Liberal Democrats - Winning for Hampshire

Axe the tax - before it's too late!

11.02.17am GMT Wed 9th Feb 2005

The Liberal Democrats have taken the lead in campaigning against the Council Tax but there is a new urgency to the campaign as Hampshire residents face the threat of huge tax hikes in two years' time.

Figures obtained by Liberal Democrat MPs show that many home-owners could be moved into a higher Council Tax band.

That means even higher tax bills when the changes come into force in 2007.

Areas most at risk of paying more are those where house prices have risen fastest since the Council Tax bands were first set in 1991.

The Government has already re-valued homes in Wales and almost two-thirds of council-tax payers in Cardiff moved into a higher tax band.

The only way to guarantee that we don't face higher Council Tax bills is to scrap the tax altogether. Only the Liberal Democrats are committed to doing so.
