Lib Dems close gap in Portsmouth

9.47.01am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 2nd Sep 2005

Yesterday's by-election for a place on Portsmouth City Council saw a nail-biting finish as predicted.

Liberal Democrat Patrick Whittle closed the gap on the Conservatives in Drayton & Farlington ward to just 175 votes.

A real team effort on the day saw Lib Dem activists from as far afield as Cornwall, Oxford and Orpington helping the campaign.

Despite the Tories narrowly holding the seat, the Liberal Democrats continue to run the Council with exactly half the seats.
