Liberal Democrats have welcomed EU plans to compensate rail passengers for journey delays

Sharon Bowles, Liberal Democrat MEP for Hampshire welcomed proposals that will give rail passengers the right to compensation if their train journey is delayed for over an hour. The plans have won the backing of the European Parliament.

The EU regulation will significantly improve consumer protection on both domestic and international rail journeys for all rail customers making a two hour or more journey. Rail companies would be liable to compensate passengers for lost luggage, and for not giving customers full and clear information about their journey.

"In 2003 train ticket prices in the South East increased by an average of 7%, yet there continues to be little sign of improvement. Slam door trains remain a common sight in our region, a recurring nightmare for those with disabilities, such as wheelchair users and the elderly. It is about time someone stood up for the long suffering British rail passenger," commented Sharon Bowles.

"Our rail network is notorious for poor service. If rail companies are threatened with paying out vast sums of compensation and for ensuring proper accessibility perhaps they may be more willing to make essential improvements. This could be just the sort of kickstart it needs."
