Hants Tory MEP opposes leader

10.48.25am GMT Sat 24th Dec 2005

Tory Euro MP Daniel Hannan has spoken out publicly against his party leader in the European Parliament.

In his latest 'Euro Briefing' Mr Hannan makes the case for Conservative MEPs to leave the centre-right European Peoples Party grouping. The leader of the Tory MEPs Timothy Kirkhope is opposed to plans to take the Tories out of the mainstream EPP group.

The move to leave the EPP was among the first act of new Conservative Party leader David Cameron. Mr Hannan is quoted as preferring Tory MEPs to link up with right wing parties from Eastern Europe.

The Tory split over the issue was highlighted by a recent election for Chair of the Tory group in Brussels. Two thirds of the MEPs backed Mr Kirkhope. Only one third supported the candidate who backs David Cameron's plans.
