Tories to increase fly tipping

11.48.08am GMT Tue 26th Feb 2008

Conservatives at Hampshire County Council should think again over new restrictions at our waste recycling centres.

From mid-February Hampshire residents who use want to use these facilities can only do so from a trailer smaller than 6 by 4' or from the boot of their car.

No commercial vehicles are allowed, residents who only have access to a van as their sole means of transport will have to obtain a permit if they wish to dump household waste or garden rubbish. If your trailer is over 6 by 4 tough luck !

Vehicle number plate recognition to prevent "over frequent use" is also under consideration.

Why are all these draconian measures happening?

County say that almost a £1 million of trade waste illegally passes through Hampshire's Waste Recovery Centres (HWRCs).

The reason this has become an issue now due to increased landfill charges that are coming in.

There are plenty of businesses who want to recycle so I asked officers why the County Council does not permit trade waste. The answer - County is not statutorily required to do so.

So much for being green.

Liberal Democrats believe that these new restrictions are not thought through. They will simply cause a massive increase in fly tipping and it will be Parish Councils, Farmers, Landowners, the MoD and Local Nature Reserve charities who will have to foot the bill to clean it up.
